This book has many lessons and morals. School no longer held the exciting appeal it had years ago. His mother berates his father because she claims she is in charge of disciplining the children and he is spoiling The Boy. David's mother forced David to repeat the first grade, even though he had the most "happy face" papers out of the whole class, just so she could have a reason to punish him.

Dave was part of a typical family, a good family. Are you sure you want to delete this answer? That was a VERY significant moment.
